Acupuncture is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The goal of this treatment is to restore the harmonious balance of Qi in the body. According to TCM, Qi flows through meridians or pathways in the body, which are accessible through 361 acupuncture points. In order to achieve this, thin needles are inserted into the body at these points to stimulate sensory nerves in the skin and muscles.
Acupuncture has been proven to help relieve pain by helping the body heal itself. The practice has been around for thousands of years. As more information is gathered on the practice of acupuncture, it has become a more popular method in Western medicine to help treat musculoskeletal pain.
When choosing acupuncture, it provides:
- The ability to use with other treatments
- No pharmaceuticals
- Low risk of side effects
- Flexible treatment that can target many issues at once
- Natural and noninvasive
What to Expect During an acupuncture Session
If you have not yet experienced acupuncture treatments, here is an outline of the process to help you feel more comfortable:
Assessment & Evaluation
Before starting treatment, Dr. Dalton will review your medical history and current condition. She may ask about your symptoms, pain levels and other relevant medical information to determine if acupuncture is right for you. After that a physical examination may be necessary to find your trigger points and muscle tension
Informed consent
The acupuncture treatment process will be fully explained upfront and you will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss any concerns
Needle insertion
Depending on the area being treated, you will be asked to either lie face down or face up on the treatment table. After sterilizing your skin, a thin, sterilized needle will gently be inserted into the areas of pain, tight muscle or trigger point. Once the needles are in place, they are manipulated by gently twirling or moving them
Duration of session
Acupuncture usually lasts around 15-30 minutes depending on the treatment and the individual’s response.
Communication
The entire time the process is taking place, Dr. Dalton will communicate with you to ensure you are comfortable and are not feeling discomfort. You are encouraged to communicate any discomfort or concerns at any time
